An interview with Liverpool based artist TIËRNY
Liverpool based singer/songwriter TIËRNY combines powerful raw vocals, catchy hooks and emotive melodies with classical elements, self-titling the genre as Baroquetronica, creating melancholic pop perfection. We spoke about her inspirations, motivations to make it in the music industry and future plans.
Hello, Tierny Welcome to Fave Sounds How are you?
I’m good thank you in light of all the madness! How are you?
Good thank you and at what point did you realize that you wanted to pursue your music career?
When I was young I wanted to be an actress, and I went to drama school, but I always had an affinity with music. I took piano lessons when I was a kid and I wrote a lot of poetry and it was a natural progression I guess, It’s a culmination of my favourite things art music and poetry.
Which artists really inspired you ?
I’m hugely inspired by Karima Francis. She’s an amazing artist from my hometown of Blackpool. I met her after leaving drama school and we became great friends. She pushed me to pursue music seriously and made me believe I had the ability to do great things. Coming from a small town there aren’t many people that make it out,and she was proof it could be done. She mentored me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
Amy Winehouse – I saw her live when and that changed my life. Her talent astounds me and the impact she left on society and music will never be forgotten a true legend.
Fiona Apple – I adore her lyrics and wordplay her song ‘I’ll Know’ is one of my all time favourites.
Marina – amazing contemporary pop artist. She was a huge focus point when I first started writing music.
Lana Del Rey – A prolific songwriter and captivating live performer there’s a fragility to her I find so endearing
FKA Twigs – I think she is a goddess, a true creative she’s changing the face of music in every way possible. She is the future.
What have been your biggest achievements thus far ?
I supported Stealing Sheep at the end of last year, They are phenomenal beautiful humans and another huge influence. I’m also very proud of my EP and releasing my debut single Solid Ground.
What would you say are your biggest challenges at this stage?
At the moment it’s a lot of hard work, as an independent artist you do everything yourself, It can be hard especially when things don’t work out, but it’s a great learning experience. Persistence is the key don’t be afraid to make people notice you and get creative when reaching out to make it memorable.
Do you ever feel pressured to conform to what everyone else is doing?
Not at all, I’m making music I want to make and telling my stories the way I want to tell them. There are people out there that will resonate with what I am doing. If you’re constantly trying to fit in boxes or to please others, you’re denying yourself creative freedom and true self expression and what would be the point of that??

My singles Solid Ground and I’ll Wait are available now on all major platforms.
What is your new single ‘I’ll Wait’ about?
All of my songs are about me coming to terms with myself in one way or another. ‘I’ll Wait’ reflects the duality and irony of hate\love and that fine line you tread when in an all consuming relationship. The person in question didn’t love me anymore. This was my way of trying to reconcile with one final declaration of love. It was me saying I’m still here if you ever change your mind. It’s a sad banger, heartbreak you can dance to ’
During self- Isolation, what are the things that you will be doing that you haven’t had a chance to do?
I’m going to brush up on my logic skills, I mainly just write chords and lyrics, me and James co-produce, but it would be nice for me to have an idea and instantly create the sounds in my mind. I’m working on EP 2 and preparing for the next single release so there’s lots to keep me busy!
What was the best piece of advice you have ever received?
‘Success is nothing without integrity’ I got that from a fortune cookie
What are your future plans?
I’m looking to start branching out and gigging across the UK once all this is over, hopefully get Some tour support and festivals, and share my music with as many people as possible. I’m releasing my debut EP – REVELATIONS later in the year which I’m so excited about. I’m just going to keep creating, whatever form that may take and see what the future holds.
