Introducing dream pop songstress Ocean and the Waves

Ocean and the Waves, who’s name was inspired by Oceans island upbringing in Spain and her Aquarian zodiac sign, is a dream pop act currently based in London. Originally breaking the scene with an anthem for her generation “Golden Kids”, Ocean has been releasing music since May 2019. She started writing songs in New York at 18 when she moved to the city to pursue acting “Music seemed like a more authentic way to talk about my experiences, in acting I was always playing other people”. Her songs are inspired by her many travels, heartbreaks and the way she sees the world.

Hello, How are you?

A little bit anxious about the world right now but hopeful.

At what point did you realize that you wanted to pursue your music career?

The moment I realised I was good enough.

Which artists really inspired you ?

Stevie Nicks, Lana del Rey, Florence Welch and David Bowie to name a few. Taylor Swift has actually influenced me a great deal too.

What have been your biggest achievements thus far ?

I pride myself in being able to love fiercely and fully with everything I have been through. I’m a very fearful person but my ability to love has never been affected by that.

What would you say are your biggest challenges at this stage?

Gaining visibility in a market that lives in boxes and genres. Happy, dance/pop songs seem to sky rocket. My music is often melancholic and thoughtful. I have many sides to me and I would hope to stand for a feeling, an aesthetic and an energy that goes beyond a musical genre.

Do you ever feel pressured to conform to what everyone else is doing?

Absolutely. Its important to look around, see what the world wants and putting your own spin on it but in the end I can’t do anything I don’t feel with all my heart.

Name the five tracks that you are loving right now?

Delete Forever by Grimes, Les matins by Angèle, Chewing-Gum by Vendredi sur Mer, Little Lies by Fleetwood Mac & Happiness is a butterfly by Lana del Rey/ the whole NFR record.

Do you have any music/ projects out right now that you would like to share?

I released my 6th single called ‘Ascension’

What is the record about?

It’s about self-isolation when you’re trying to heal and realising your heart will mend when you connect and let life in fearlessly. Something that I always need to be reminded of.

What was the best piece of advice you have ever received?

All you have to do is be yourself and they will love you.

What are your future plans?

New York City is always on my horizon. It’s where I know I will end up. I get goosebumps just thinking about returning, hopefully to play at Madison Square Garden. That’s the dream… That’s the plan.
