Sola Nails a Modern Take on RnB

Sola’s new alternative R&B track, Self-Destructing, expertly marries the vocals with the arrangement. What we mean by this is that the song starts off calmly, with a simplistic double-kick groove, as she sets up the situation that she has currently found herself in. This is followed by a hard-hitting chorus that gives the listener an inkling of what she’s feeling. The pulse-like rhythm of the chorus possibly replicates her heartbeat as she describes the extent to which her emotions are taking her to. What’s more, the bass-line at the end of the bar in the chorus exactly follows the vocal melody. This is an even more explicit example of how well Sola has managed to make the arrangement and the vocal melody feel like one.
