The kids are alright, if 17-year-old Billie Eilish’s Bury a Friend is anything to go by. With beat-drenched production and heavy gothic sensibilities, at first glance it seems all too similar to Eilish’s other work. However, this song manages to separate itself from the pack on the basis of its eerie lyrics and rapid tempo. The dark lyrics muse on mortality, successfully creating an atmosphere of dread that’s offset by the sweetness of Billie’s vocal delivery. Add voice modulations and syncopated rhythms to the mix, and you have yourself an unpredictable number that’s bound to be a hit.
