Music doesn’t always have to be articulated in a neat and uniform structure. As a form of emotional expression, one must manipulate existing norms to suit what the artist wants to say, and Carmen Lees’ track, Something Special, does exactly that. There’s a certain rawness to her vocals that makes it sound like she’s almost speaking to the listener. She adds to this by varying when she hits accented notes, which creates a variation in the rhythm of her vocals. Because of this, her song works in unison with what her raw emotions are: that she deserves something special. What makes this song particularly interesting and complex is that she counters this rawness with continuous riffs on a clean electric guitar with high reverb and delay, which sounds smooth and atmospheric, as opposed to her vocals, which feel rather grounded.
