In her new single, Rather Be, ELI kicks it up a notch with the amount of variation she brings in a song. The track begins with a beautiful acoustic guitar riff that’s plucked with crisp tenderness that gives the song a particular rawness to it. This is enhanced even more so with a rhythmic backbeat that sounds like the strum of a guitar. That’s not all! ELI introduces the vocals with a vocal harmony in the minor scale – which continues throughout the song. However, in the second chorus, the artist adds another layer of complexity by introducing a subtle guitar lead that’s in the harmonic minor scale. Even though ELI constantly introduces and develops new levels of variation in this track, the music remains cohesive and entertaining.
